What is bacterial meningitis?
[26]
Meningitis is an infection of the meninges, which surround the brain and spinal cord. Bacterial infection causes bacterial meningitis. The severity of this infection can very widely, from actute to life threatening. The infection can cause the tissues around the brain to swell. This in turn interferes with blood flow and can result in paralysis or even stroke. However, acute bacterial meningitis is the most common form (about 80% of all cases). Anyone experiencing symptoms of meningitis should see a doctor immediately.
